Advent Calendar

Our "mittens & socks" advent calendar is a tradition that was started by my Mom about 3 years ago.  It is one of the main things that the boys look forward to during the Christmas season.

This advent calendar is ultra simple:

  • Use wooden clothes pins to clip pairs of socks and mittens to a string.
  • Print out numbers from 1 to 24 to glue onto the clips.
  • Fill the socks and mittens with a treat for each day.
  • As the pairs of socks and mittens come down, the kids can wear them, and then I fill the empty clips with holiday cards that we receive.  It makes a cute display through the whole holiday season!

As a new twist for this year... instead of holiday toys from the dollar store, I am going to put a note in each sock and mitten describing a family activity to look forward to in the evening (things like 'sip cocoa by the tree', or 'go for a drive to look at Christmas lights.')  I got the idea from Courtney at A Thoughtful Place.  I think it's a great way for the whole family to focus on what's important at Christmas, and awesome to teach the kids that Christmas is about much more than receiving gifts.  Thanks for the fabulous idea, Courtney!  See Courtney's advent calendar here!
